Obstructed Doorway

Posted by Dave on November 03, 2000 at 12:43:55:

My landlord has just installed a building-wide fire safety system (sprinkers), with the controller for the entire floor directly next to the entrance to my apartment. Once covered with drywall, this contraption will obstruct my doorway by a good 4-5 inches, if not more. Is this legal? I would think it would be considered a safety hazard. Can I withhold rent until the fixture is remodelled?

Not to mention that this system is now in place after 14 months of unannounced construction to add 2 floors to what used to be a 6 floor building. I have already withheld one month's rent, equivalent to $100 for every month they have violated the Warranty of Habitablity. Thank you for any advice you can provide!
