I admire you for having the chutzpah to hold a months rent and you seem like a man that won't take this nonsense laying down. If your doorway was going to be obstructed by 4-5 inches, the landlord should have informed you of this BEFORE he started the work. Also, is there any other place that he could have put it without blocking your door or another tenant's door? Some fools may think that 4-5 inches is nothing except when they have a furniture delivery.

I would call the fire dept inspection office and have them take a look at this thing. Since there has been a material change to your apt without your knowledge, you may be able to break your lease. Check with a lawyer or Tenant Net.
