Sewer Backup

Posted by Elizabeth on May 13, 1999 at 13:17:54:

We live in a basement apartment building and at 5am this morning the sewer outside backed up. Every disgusting thing imaginable came up into our apartment through the toilet and bathtup. The super is supposed to be on call 24 hrs a day and no one showed up until almost 8:30am after I had been calling since 5:30am. We have a lot of damage, especially in our children's room. My husband and I are currently waiting for the landlord to come and see our apt. We do owe rent and they want to see if they can "work something out." I don't think that is fair when we've lost so much and this is not the first time that our apartment has flooded because of a backup. The last time we had almost $2,000 in damages. Can someone please tell me what I should do or say to the landlord in this matter. Thanks.
