I live in a basement apartment that is not rent stabilized/controlled. When my lease was renewed in Jan. 2000, it was increased by 24%, and noted on the lease that the lease was renewable each January thereafter with a 3% increase in rent. Last month I was notified that my rent will rise another 24% as of September 1. Is it legal to raise the rent before the lease is up for renewal?
I am very suspicious.
