can the landlord ask for a key to my mailbox?

They recently installed new locks on our mailboxes and the landlord kept a key for each box. What's that about? Why should he have a key to my mailbox? Is that kosher?

The reality is, most of these mailbox locks are so cheap that one key is likely to open several boxes. Also, when you move into an apartment there's really no guarantee that somebody doesn't already have a key to your mailbox.

Plenty of people change the locks on the apartment but how many change the mailbox lock?
