Terminating Lease

So, my boyfriend and I may be moving out of state because of a job offer. We would be moving in the middle of our lease. What sort of penalties are involved? Losing the security deposit only? And, how much notice should we give? A friend of ours recently broke his lease, and the apt. management company wanted the security deposit and two months rent? Is this what we should expect?
