Landlord will not give mailing address

Postby bklyn11215 » Mon Jan 27, 2003 1:31 pm

We have lived in our apartment for the last 3 years. We have tried numerous times to get a mailing address for our landlord, as to where to send the rent check. He hesitates, and will not give it out, but instead seems to knock on our door to get it. We have in the past shoved it under the supers door, but don't want to do that anymore. (long story...). We just don't feel we should have to do that. Doesn't the landlord have to give you a mailing address? Is this in writing somewhere, like the handbook? No, the address is not on the lease.
Thanks for any help.

sounds super shady

you might be able to use this tool:

http://www.uspdr.com/Consumer/ownername.asp

I browsed housingnyc.com but could not find anything about a LL having to post/provide information. Shouldn't there be a building certificate posted with information on it though by law?
most Landlords suck it.

Another webisute you might want to try is the
Automated City Register Information System (ACRIS)at
http://a836-acris.nyc.gov/Scripts/Coverpage.dll/index

I found this website more user friendly than the one mentioned by Pointerout.

Go to NYC Housing Preservation and Development and go to Violations & Building Data, if you search for your address it should populate the managing agent/owner and address on record with the city.

Did you click "registration" on the left hand side of the screen for the building details when you found your building at NYC Housing Preservation and Development website?

Yes, I did finally find that....however his address is listed as the same as mine. His sister lives in the apartment he has listed as his own. :)

here is the line to the New York City Cepartment of Buildings web site.

http://www.ci.nyc.ny.us/html/dob/home.html

You might also try nycserv-the dept of taxation web site. click on Property Taxes by BBL, and you'll see a menu, one of the choices is Property Taxes By Address.

The websites Lily suggested also have the same problem of LL can put down any address he wishes for where the tax bill is sent, which is probably to his sister at the same address. LL seems to be trying to keep a low profile and does not wish to be found, short of hiring a private investigator.

My landpeople do the same thing. They list their address with the DOH as being in the building, although they do not live there (nor do any of their relatives).

I got their address from my neighbors, but short of that, I'm not sure what you could do. Maybe give the DOH a call and ask them?
Don't say "Downstairs Neighbor told me so." Contact a lawyer.

Terrific websites--thanks to all.
My question to Bklyn11215 is why the LL's address is required? Perhaps you can answer this question without revealing your identity (you've already revealed your zip code, which is too much info already). The reason for your need for this info might dictate your approach.
Keep in mind that I am a tenant. Not a lawyer!!!!!

The reason we want the LLs address is because we would like to send the rent check out. The super lady has a rug or something shoved up against her door inside, and we simply cannot slip it under the door. They also do not keep the same hours as we do, so its hard to drop it off.

Lilly-
thank you, I actually found what I was looking for in the NYC Dept of Buildings you suggested.
Also, suprisingly, the DOB guy came today, and looked around, saying he was checking for 39 violations that happened between 1984 and the present that were never checked on. hmmmm, looks to me like some work will be getting done around here. He was writing quite a bit. We will see.
