I was given a renewal lease with an increase from preferential rent of less than 2000 to the maximum legal round of almost 2600. What are my options? I have several things I want to point out to the landlord about it but he is hard to get in touch with. I need to know if the landlord is allowed to raise the rent that much after one year ? Please help! Any advice would really help.
Was a preferential rent rider attached to your initial lease when you moved in? This is crucial, and what did it say?
Have you gotten a DHCR rent history? It could be that the "legal rent" is bogus. Have you been in occupancy for less than four years? You can file a challenge to the rent then.
