I posted in 2 sections because I didn't know where it should go...
I moved to Florida in February and found a tenant to take over my apartment in early-mid January. I called my landlord at that time and asked what procedure I needed to follow in order to sublet my space in the apartment. I was switched between several people, told that I couldn't sublet once, and then called again to speak with the supervisor. He told me that because I was only subletting my room and I had cotenants, that I could not sublet. I stayed on the phone with him for a while trying to explain my situation, and that the guarantors could remain the same if necessary. He continued to tell me no.
I recently came across the portion of the NY real property law that informed me of proper and legal subletting procedure and I immediately wrote my landlord a letter. They responded with the same procedure that I found, but 2 months after I needed it. The trouble is that now I only have 3 months left on my lease, am out of the state, and will have great trouble finding a subtenant.
Is there anything I can do to recoup my losses?
Thanks.
