A coalition of conservancy groups agreed yesterday to
pay more than $4 million to buy 115 community gardens
that had been set for the auction block by the City.
Environmental groups and the Puerto Rican Legal
Defense and Education Fund had filed lawsuits
challenging the auction on the ground that the City was
discriminating against its non-white residents by
eliminating the open space provided by the gardens, a
majority of which lie in non-white communities. Lawyers for
the groups said that despite the sale, they would proceed
with the suits' challenge to the auction on constitutional
grounds.
