This happened to me when I first moved to the city from New England; my
roommate and I had no real job history (she was a flight attendant, which
landlords DO NOT like, and I had just graduated) and even though her father
was willing to be the guarantor, he lived out of state and the LL's made
us put down about $8,000, which was put in escrow. I'm not totally
familliar w/ all NYC housing laws, but (especially in an apt. that doesn't
have any type of rent control - stablilization, etc.) it seems that they
can pretty much do what they want and get away with it. Hopefully someone
will post something here to the contrary, but I believe you either have to
just grin & bear it or find another apt.! Sorry I couldn't be more
helpful....
