I am trying to rent a 2 bedroom apartment in Roosevelt Island, just outside of Manhattan.

The landlord is requesting 1st month's rent + 3 additional month's rent as security deposit. This means I have to scrape together close to $8,000!

1) Isn't this a little excessive? it couldn't possibly be the standard, can it?
2) Does the fact that I have no rental history in New York have something to do with it?
3) Is there any chance that I can negoiate the security deposit down?
