My wife has resided with her mother in their (now our) rent controlled apartment since 1963, when she was 8 months old.
When her mother moves to Florida in the upcoming year, will my wife have to do anything to ensure
smooth succession rights to the apartment?

In general, the landlord seems to have been unhostile and cooperative with most issues in the building.
