Can landlord refuse Joint account check?

Posted by Mike Keith on September 04, 2001 at 22:37:17:

Manhattan, rent stabilized written lease in a pre-war non-co-op non-condo building with about 25 or so apartments.

A friend has had his girlfriend living with him for nearly two years -- his name is on the lease and hers is not. In recent months they got a joint checking account and have paid the rent with that joint-check, signed by him. For this month's rent, they sent in a joint check (this time signed by her, the non-lease holder).

He got a call from his landlord saying that that joint check will not be accepted and to provide payment in another form.

Can a landlord refuse legal tender?

Thanks,

Mike Keith
