Its a lot easier to renovate an empty apartment than one filled with tenants. So assume that you will have to move.

No, no one is going to pay your moving expenses. That is your responsibility.

This post shows one reason why, over the long term, it is much cheaper to own than to rent. It amazes me that so many people in New York don't think any further ahead than the next month's rent in making housing decisions. Home ownership, in its various forms, is lower in New York than any other city. I guess New Yorkers just love their landlords.
