in the long run, it's better to own than to rent. but to get to a point where you have enough capital to make such a big initial investment takes a long time. for some people who live paycheck to paycheck, its almost an impossibility. i'd like to own my own place, and i've been saving as much as possible to do that eventually, but it's gonna take a long time before i'm there. and i'm sure a lot of people don't look good to a bank, credit risks or whatever. still, there are probably a lotta people out there who, with some proper budgeting, could buy something. they may not even know it since it seems like such a daunting task.
