I recently had that problem, and the unannounced visits had stopped due in part to a little security camera (nanny cam).

The super of my building has the habit of visiting tenant apartments without their knowledge. Taking small change and bills from piggy banks, dressers and night stands (things people don't seem to notice missing), but add up per apartment and floor it is alot of money. After seeing the supers wife exiting an apartment one day on my floor (I was home sick that day) I put two and two together and got the camera.

Of course when the package came to my building the super and his wife over heard a conversation I was having with the delivery person and the unannounce visits stopped for the time being. Do I use that camera now? yes, I review the tape every night... Pain the the butt, but I feel a little safer now that I have the camera and if someone enters my apartment whether or not for legal purposes... I have video proof of what happened.

of course if the tape, VCR and/or the apartment is burglarized. I now know someone was in my apartment and stole my things.

: I live in new york city and my landlord lives in the building. I have heard from the other tenants that he can be very sexually forward toward female friends and visitors of tenants, and snoops in peoples apartments quite frequently..reading their personal papers, moving things around, generally acting as if it is HIS place.

: I have bought a lock that i do not plan on giving him keys to. If he should complain, that i am keeping him out, does he have legal recourse? How do i stop him from snooping. I so far have not had problems, but i did see he has moved some things in my apartment around and i am worried.

: He also does not keep the security deposit in a separate interest bearing account. I just signed the lease and am very worried. If necessary can i get out of a lease if he should start harassing me?
