Renting an apartment after I've been to housing court

Postby michele6608 » Sun Sep 08, 2013 2:36 pm

Twenty years ago I was in Housing court for non payment of rent. I eventually left the apartment not owing anything (so I thought) I did a check and it says I owe $8000 which I dispute I called the management company and they cannot locate me because its so old. I am moving back to NYC and wish to rent a apartment but I'm afraid this will hinder me . Can anyone offer any suggestion I left NYC because I was so frustrated trying to find a apartment.

Where does "it" say you owe $8,000. What is "it?"

Do you have the papers from the court case? If not a court order, there should have been an order of discontinuance. How did the case end?

The rent was no more than $500 and when I left I didn't owe anything so I was shocked when they said I owed $8000

Are you sure you called Housing Court? I've never seen or heard of anyone at Housing Court to have that sort of information available. What number did you call?

You can always go to HC and put in a request for the original file ... but it would take a while as cases that old would no longer be in the courthouse and instead would be in the court archives, stored elsewhere.

There might have been a judgment that was paid, but a judgment nonetheless.

Generally bad information can only exist on your credit report for seven years, and must then be taken off. You should get copies of your credit report and credit score. You can get up to three free copies per year from the three agencies.

A judgment however, we believe, can exist for up to 20 years. If the LL isn't coming after you, then you're lucky.

I would still get a copy of the court file. Perhaps the court didn't get notice that the judgment was paid.
