Eviction procedure in NYC?

Postby EV » Mon Aug 24, 2009 3:04 am

I apologize if this question has already been asked a million times before, but I can't seem to find an answer.

I'm wondering exactly how long an eviction procedure can take in NYC, and what will happen? I have always paid my rent faithfully (been a tenant in the building for 5+ years), but now I lost my job and am having a really hard time coming up with the $$$.
My landlord sends a letter if I am 2 weeks late, but I've never let it go beyond that.
Now I'm concerned I won't be able to pay anymore at all (September), unless I find work asap. :(

So my basic question is: if I stop paying my rent per September 1st, what happens next?

I have 1 month security deposit, and my neighbor says it will take at least 3 months for the landlord to evict me (if they choose to do so...)

There is a chance I might have a job in November, but if not I will actually leave the US (by mid November).

I live in a rent-stabilized apartment and my lease doesn't expire until next year...

Any suggestions? If I do stop paying rent per September 1st, will I still be liable for the remaining rent? What will happen to my credit score? Will I ever be able to live in NYC again? Will I risk being arrested if I try to leave the country, or come back?

Thanks!
EV
