Is 'colored' water from sink, etc. 'dirty' water?

Postby sr77 » Mon Aug 24, 2020 9:24 pm

There are times that running water (sink, bathtub, etc.) suddenly becomes colored. It generally lasts for several minutes, then returns to normal.

What is actually causing the discoloration?

That is, what's actually in water when it looks dirty?

If it's rust in the pipes, how does it collect in a quantity enough to discolor running water?

Thanks.

This really isn't a RS issue.

In my experience, if the LL has a plumber working on pipes, when they restart the water, some of the sediment (usually iron filings or "rust") can be flushed out of the system for a minute or two. This is normal. If it doesn't return to a clear state after several minutes, then I would call your super or LL.

Thanks, then I guess it shouldn't happen at all unless a plumber's been working in the building.

Sorry, I guess this should have gone in Gen'l Discussion.
