Housing Court Advocate/Lay Representative?

Postby ErikV » Thu May 12, 2011 5:26 pm

We have a housing court case pending against us. We have been planning a trip to Europe for a long time, and we're leaving soon.

I think I read somewhere that we can appoint someone to represent us in court but now I can't find the webpage.

Is this true, and if so, where can I get more information?

You can hire a lawyer. I know sometimes non-attorney advocates can be present and can advise a tenant -- if the judge allows it. But they can't officially represent the tenant on their own or without the tenant being present. Only lawyers can do that.

Thank you for replying. I may be misremembering, but I believe what I read said this was possible in situations where the respondent was physically unable to come to court, eg a home-bound person.

I don't recall that, but there are always exceptions.
