Rental Condo Roommate

Postby DownSnow » Mon May 25, 2015 11:58 am

Hey guys,

I recently rented a condo in downtown Manhattan. I am the only one named on the condo lease. However, I am planning to add a roommate to live with me now (both of us will occupy the condo). Generally, what do I need to do in order to add my roommate? I heard the NYS has the "Roommate Law" that permits me to have one roommate regardless what my lease says. The only thing I need to do is to notify my landlord with 30 days. Does this law also apply in my situation?

Thanks!

Having roommates does not depend on being rent regulated. And as far as we know, being in a condo should not matter.

The quickest way to explain this is for your to start at http://tenant.net/Rights/roommates.html

Thank you for your reply! I have read many references on the Roommate law, and I was just not sure whether renting a condo would be different. Now it's clear!

Thanks again!

The Roommate Law is part of the Real Property Law -- RPL §235-f

It does not deal directly with rent stab, but all rentals.

See it at http://tenant.net/Other_Laws/RPL/rpl07.html
Then search for "235-f" or "Unlawful restrictions on occupancy"
