Alesson to be learned from this post, whether sincere or otherwise:
The USA is a dream, goal, hope and aspiration to a great many immigrants from a great many nations. These immigrants, grateful and happy for any shelter they may find here, no matter what the conditions or costs, will accept situations such as those listed. An atrocity? Yes. Indeed. Inhumane? Absolutely.
But let us not loose sight of the fact that, just like the immigrants from nations abroad, there are also those who immigrate to NYC on a regular basis from the suburbs and other states in our own country who suffer the delusion that residence in NYC is the ultimate success. They too will accept small dwellings, some sub-standard (since they are ignorant of the rules, regulations and laws governing housing here), and will accept being brutally raped when signing a lease for what has become, unrealistic rents.
All of this factors into what has now become a landlord-land, where, if one party refuses to accept the status quo and searches elsewhere for more suitable and economic housing, some poor, unsuspecting Joe drops by and scoops up what s/he thinks is the deal of the century!
Yes, indeed, and undeniably, these people are being screwed to the walls of some of the worst housing in NYC history and are paying brutal rents for something just above a tin shack. But, unless people stop accepting the dung being thrown at them, this situation will do nothing but become progressively worse.
As a native New Yorker, I grow too weary of sob stories of people being "taken advantage of". Tenant Net is a beautiful resource for information and a great gift to us all. It's more than about time that we use the information and knowledge given us to an end... that end being the finality of landlord rape of tenants in this city.
Maureen, if the allegations posted are true and you are so miserable, much good advice has been given to you. No one is responsible for taking your cause and running into battle with it. Nor is it anyone's responsibility to battle the multidudinous injustices done to those who would, like sheep to the slaughter, accept the abuse which they have been quietly accepting over the years.... to the detriment of all too many.
Time to get up off your hind quarters here folks. There are council memebers who are leaving this term, who have helped maintain some sembalnce of sanity in housing regulations over the years. Get to your representatives and let them know that you'll not stand for further abuse and violation against you. And when the time comes for action, join that Tenants' Association, form your own. Get up. Get out. Get seen and heard.
