: I need to break my lease in Illinois. 6 months left. But conditions have declined with neighbors fighting, an decreased feeling of safety, etc. Rentors will NOT let us get out of it, despite our constant pleas, letter writings, contacting the police on neighbors, etc. Anyone know what we can do in Illinois, without spending a ton on lawyers and courts?

Can't speak for Illinois law, but if the LL has broken the lease due to
bad conditions, warranty of habitability or failure to provide contractual
services, you could use that as a defense. Make sure your case is solid.
Of course you can move out anytime, but the obligation for the remaining
rent is what is at issue. Also, in many cases, in order to claim damages,
LLs must demonstrate they've made an attempt to "mitigate damages" by
making a good attempt (and failing) to find a new renter.
