noise

Posted by Jay on February 09, 1999 at 14:41:18:

My wife and I have been living in an apartment in NYC for 19 months. We
do not own a stero and we work 11+ hours a day (including commuting). We
own a kitten and a 10 lb., 11 year old dog. About 3 months ago we received
a letter from the landlord stating that the tenant below us had complained
of excessive noise. We assumed that we were creating some noise because we
hear footsteps, music, TV's, door slamming, pets, etc. from the apartments
below and above us, but we had never been approached about the problem in
person and we were a little annoyed that we were now suddenly in trouble with
the landlord. The super informed us that we should lay down carpeting. So
we covered our common areas with 1/2" padding underneath area rugs and we
stopped wearing shoes around the apartment. Unfortunately this was not
good enough for the tenant who hits her ceiling repeatedly whenever she
hears noise. We have tried to speak with her without success and to date
we still do not know the nature of our noise. We have spoken with other
tenants in the building who have all said they hear their neighbors and
thought our reaction to the problem was excessive. We are reasonable and
we want to work this out with her, but we have run out of ideas and we are
tired of hearing her knock at us when we walk around our home.
