call the fire dep't and tell them what's going on......if the boiler is running on gas, it is possible you smell a gas leak which may explode in your face as you are sniffing around..call 212 960 4800 , the central general complaint number and tell them about the explosion and the odor...send the landlord a certified letter and advise him of your "concern" regarding the situation and DEMAND that he fix it immediately!!!.keep your rent in your pocket because this does not sound like a livable apt!!!is the boiler right under your apt? if so, you are lucky that you were not blown to kingdom come when it blew up !!!!
