: My roommate and I were subletting a rent-controlled apartment. The landlord contacted us and cut a deal to give us the apt. in return for us helping him evict the legal tenant. I refused to testify in court because it was unfair and he gave the apartment to my roommate and evicted me. Isn't this illegal?

There are several things wrong here. First, were you subletting the apartment with the landlord's knowledge? Did he accept checks/money orders from you? What were his grounds for evicting the "legal tenant"? If it was "unfair" , how did he win this case in housing court? Also, if you established residency then you should not have left the apartment. Did a housing court judge evict you?
I need further information about the situation and then I would be glad to respond. You can email me at dbf2173@aol.com.
