The title transfer would be recorded at the borough office of the City Register. The Manhattan office is at 31 Chambers Street.

The landlord is also required to file a new multiple dwelling registration form with the Department of Housing Preservation and Development at the time of the transfer. The registration shows the owner, the owner's principals and the new managing agent.

Your payment of the December rent to the old landlord before you received notice of the transfer is good. You might send the new landlord a copy of the cancelled check.

: We were notified by a letter slipped under our door Dec. 2
: Dec. rent (due the 1st) was paid to the old landlord, who cashed the check.
: Jan. rent was sent to the new landlord on Jan 1.
: The new landlord returned our check to us saying we owed December rent as
: well, and that he would not accept partial payment for rent.

: Q: What proof do we have that title was transferred?
: Q: What is proper notification of such a change to tenants?
: Q: How can we be responsible for December's rent when notified *after*
