landlord harrassment

Posted by Frank on December 22, 1999 at 15:38:43:

I need advice about how to deal with a landlord (actually lady, approx 70 y.o.)
who feels compelled to give me rather heavy handed guidance about what is and
is not OK to keep in my apartment, both in "public" view (on window sills --
she has objected to bottled water and unlit candles in decorative candlesticks)
and in the confines of my apartment (boxes, approx. 6 for purposes of packing
gifts for holiday sending--she viewed these as a fire hazard). I live in the
San Francisco Bay Area suburbs, where it's an insane rental market. My rent is
about $300 a month under market. I can't figure out if she's pestering me
regularly (about once a month via messages on my phone machine) because she wants
me out to raise the rent, or she's just plum batty. In any case, I feel that
my right to live as I please is constantly being scrutinized and criticized.
More info: lease is month-to-month, 8 units in a 1950's style motel type building
(all facing central courtyard).
Landlord lives in house which is attached to apartment building.
I don't want to have to move, but really feel violated. Any advice?
