Contact your bank(s) and see if you can get copies of payments you made by check
(this can be expensive though). Someone tried to do that to me, but luckily I
had my check that he had deposited! Maybe tell him that you can get copies of
all the back checks (check with bank 1st) and that you'll sue him. Maybe this
will call his bluff. If not, sue him (and make sure you get reimbursed for the
cost of getting back copies of past checks).

: one of you frequent flyers: please help here: there's a law which says if the landlord doesn't give you a receipt, he has to prove how much was paid (like, it's not the tenants job to prove it in court). this happened to a friend a couple of years ago: she paid cash (don't do that!). he sued for money she really did pay.
