My lease expires on November 30th 1999.
I want to stay in the apartment another year and as part of negotiations the landlord
wanted to increase rent by 7% and also make me agree to a 100 day cancellation
clause so he could cancel the lease.
I disagreed with the increase and the cancellation clause. I realise that 7% is not
excessive, but the building was supposed to be brand new when I have moved in
and this has not been the case. The lobby and elevator are still unfinished and the
waste disposal is a disgrace at the front door. The other tenants agree with these points.
At the time of moving into the apartment
I was also not informed that there was going to be a prostituion parlour operating two
floors below me. Given everything that was wrong with the building in the first year
I offered him 4% however he was very angry with the points
that I had raised and said he would prefer to get me out of the building altogether.
I want to stay however I think he will try and get rid of me even if I pay the 7%.
Is there anything I can do to stay here?
