Raising rent

Posted by Karen on October 21, 1999 at 09:19:57:

My lease expires at the end of October. Last night, 10/20, my landlord told me
that my rent would go up from $1750 to $2400. It's seems ourtrageous. Anyway,
I can't imagine that I can find a new apartment in 10 days. What are my rights?
I'm in a Soho loft building. It's a co-op with three floors and about five
units though I'm not sure that they are legally divided into separate
apartments. Also, the coop includes the building next door which probably has
the same number of units. Will I have to leave at the end of October? If I
don't leave, do I have to pay the new rent? Does she need to give me anything
in writing with any notice whatsoever? I feel like I have absolutely no rights!
