Security deposit

Posted by Ed R on September 16, 1999 at 22:12:51:

I have just moved out of an apartment on good terms with the landlord. The
landlord is deducting $75 to have the carpets "professionally" steam cleaned. I
steam cleaned the carpets myself when I moved into the place (the prior tenant was
a slob) and also when I left. Now, the unit was sold and settlement was made the
day after my lease ended, so the beneficiary of this deduction from my security deposit
is the new owner. Oh, I forgot to mention that I specified in writing at the
beginning of the lease that the carpets were dirty. When I left, the carpets were
cleaner than when I moved in. Anyway I am wondering if this move is legal, since
my landlord no longer owns the unit, so he is not going to be adversely affected
by anything that is wrong with the unit anymore. I live in NJ. Thanks in advance.
