It is not legal for your landlord to impose a late fee if there is no provision in your lease for a late fee. Even if there is a provision in your lease for a late fee, $25 may be too high, depending on your rent. Courts have ruled that late fees greater than 4% or 5% are excessive.

Use the general search on TenantNet and the specific search under Housing Court Decisions for "late fee."

: Is it legal for my landlord to charge a $25 late fee if the rent is not submitted by the 5th of the month? No provisions for this were mentioned in the lease that I originally signed. Our building was sold to a new landlord who suddenly announced the institution of this new law...
