If your fiancee's name was on the lease but she didn't sign it, the lease has not been fully executed. After you have moved into apartment #2, then deal with apartment #1, when you're living in Minneapolis. See when apartment #1 was rented. Then go to whatever local and/or state agencies might be able to help you. As a last resort, you sue in small claims court.

: hello
: i hope i didn't make the biggest mistake of my
life today. i have been looking
: for an apartment to rent for my fiance and i.
had 2 narrowed down to look at. i
: could not get a response from my #1 choice(no
answer). fearing that it was
: taken, i looked at the #2 apartment. it wasn't
as nice as the first, but
: apartments are hard to find in minneapolis this
time of year. i signed a 1yr
: lease, paid a $180 deposit+$20 appl. fee. the

didn't get a copy of it. at the time
: signing, i informed the management that i was
still under consideration on
: apartment #1 and that i would let them know by
10am the next morning if
: i would take it. they he-hawed but agreed that
would be ok. an hour later
: apartment #1 called me back and i looked at it
& signed their lease, still
: thinking that the management of apt#2 would be
considerate and let me out&give
: me back the money. i didn't get a copy of the
lease, i believe it was for
: 9/1/99 to 8/31/00. immediately after signing
the lease for the #1 apt & paying
: $725 deposit, i drove to apt #2 and informed
the management that the other
: apt. was a go and i wouldn't need theirs. they
said they'd already spent my
: money and it was gone, for holding the apt for
2 hours. i don't remember what
: the particulars were in the lease for breaking
it, it seemed they understood
: my situation at the time of signing. now they
became evil. can a
