New law lets seniors break leases

Posted by Anna on July 27, 1999 at 22:23:22:

From the Update page of the 7/28 New York Law Journal: http://www.nylj.com/

Governor Pataki yesterday signed into law a measure,
to take effect Sept. 1, that will allow senior citizens to
break apartment leases without penalty if they are moving
in with relatives for medical reasons. Currently, seniors
can break a lease only to move into a health-related care
facility. A second bill signed by the Governor attempts to
insulate seniors from "high-pressure" sales techniques by
giving them a three-day "cooling off" period to cancel or
rescind a contract for senior citizen housing.

Here are the bill #'s from the NYS Assembly search page:
7 bills matched your search criteria ("senior lease"):

A02828 Defines planned retirement community and proscribes rules and regulations for
ownership and operation

A03430 Authorizes a senior citizen to terminate a leasehold or tenancy to move in with a
family member when medically unable to live independently

A03480 Relates to right of senior citizens to cancel certain contracts for housing

A04066 Requires 90 day notice by landlord of rent increase or intent not to renew certain
leases in New York city to senior citizen or disabled tenant

S00811 Relates to right of senior citizens to cancel certain contracts for housing

S01156 Authorizes a senior citizen to terminate a leasehold or tenancy to move in with a
family member when medically unable to live independently

S01629 Defines planned retirement community and proscribes rules and regulations for
ownership and operation
