Can I leave?

Posted by K. Moffett on July 13, 1999 at 11:40:48:

Five months ago my landlord raised my rent 24% to what she claims is market. I signed two copies of a new lease for one year and wrote a check for the difference in the deposit. The landlord siad she would sign the lease and return a copy to me. I have received no signed lease from the landlord and my check was never cashed. I have now found a better, cheaper apartment and want to leave 6 months before the lease I signed expires. Am I legally held to the lease if I never got a signed copy and my check was never cashed?
