You might be rent stabilized, if your building has six units or more, or you might be a month-to-month tenant, if your building has fewer than six units. In either case, it is unusual for a landlord to let a tenant remain without seeking a rent increase.

: My boyfriend and I are renting an
apartment in Brooklyn. We signed a 1-year lease
which ended in mid-June, but are still here. We
are considering moving out in five months or so.
Did our lease automatically renew itself because
nothing was done on our part or the landlords,
and if so is that for another year and we would
be breaking it if we left earlier? What becomes
of our security deposit in that case? --we would
give plenty of notice. Any help in the form of an answer or directions on who to ask would be
appreciated. Thanks.
