Some pets are not allowed in anyone's apt: new list by Dept of Health.

City's List of Outlawed Pets
Provokes Squeals of Protest

By ABBY GOODNOUGH

errets, wombats, vultures and dozens of other
species fell victim to a quality-of-life crackdown of
sorts Tuesday, when health officials approved a highly
specific list of animals that are outlawed as pets in New
York City because they are "wild, ferocious, fierce,
dangerous or naturally inclined to do harm."

Until now, the city health code banned all pets fitting
that description. Owners of unusual creatures have
asserted that the broadly worded law did not apply to
their pets, health officials said, making it harder for the
city to confiscate them.

So Tuesday, the city's Board of Health quietly voted to
amend the health code to include a list of more than
150 species that it deems unfit for urban living, from
iguanas, dingoes and pythons to snapping turtles,
prairie dogs and "all nonhuman primates." Whales were
included; piranhas were not.
