Ok here's my situation:

I'm new to renting and to the "real world" in general (22years old). I moved into this apt Jan of 1998, just after my wife and I were married. The landlord never asked me to sign a lease nor did he indicate that one even existed. I simply paid rent and I thought that this was fine - I didn't know that there needed to be a lease contract.

Well, my wife and I found a better apt, moved in, and contacted the landlord of the old apt and let him know we were moving. He said that according to the lease that I owed him July's entire rent...

This is all new to me. If I never signed a lease (nor has he ever mentioned his termination policy - or anything about a lease) do I owe him July's rent?
