Lead: more medical bad-news

Posted by Anna on June 23, 1999 at 12:04:44:

It has been known for a very long time that heavy metals, including lead, replace calcium in the human body: in the bones & in the blood stream. In the news media today are reports of another study that links below-toxic levels of lead to increased cavities in flouride-protected children. This one is from the NY Times:

http://www.nytimes.com/yr/mo/day/news/national/science/hth-children-lead.html

excerpt:

Children exposed to higher levels of lead have more
problems with tooth decay, according to a new
study that suggests that lead could account for as
many as 11 percent of pediatric cavities.
Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention estimates that nearly a million American
children still have elevated lead levels in their blood,
with consequences that can include a lowering of I.Q.
