: :Ceiling fans ARE excellent at keeping you cool, and I highly recommend them.
I use them myself, and rarely have a need to use the AC. At night, in the bedroom, it keeps me very comfortable, and cool enough to require a blanket.
Richard's idea of using heavy curtains is not so good, as it would leave the apartment in the dark, a depressing thought if you enjoy daylight and sunlight.

The installation of ceiling fans requires minimum damage, if any, to the ceiling, so go ahead and do it (get a professional to install them). If you have a light in the middle of the ceiling, you can get a fan/light combo.
Get fans with 4 long blades and 3 speed; the longer the blades, the more efficient and quieter the fan is.

Now that summer has taken hold of D.C., I have two window units to cool 750 sq ft, and I can just see my electric bills going through the roof. I mentioned that I wanted to install the fans with the condition that I leave the fans there when I vacate or patch up the hole in the ceiling.

: Well the better way is to buy heavy lined curtains to help keep the sun and heat out of the apartment, that would probably save more on your electricty than Fans... and you can take them with you,
