I see no reason why you would not be not allowed to install a window gate inside your apartment. But remember, if the window is your only alternate means of egress, the gate must not be locked with a padlock or other similar device. There are special window gates with a latch that can be opened by hand from inside the apartment, but cannot easily be opened from the outside.


: I live in a first floor apt that opens onto the street. In the front there is a large bay window with no window bars. I would like to install a window gate that goes across the length of the window behind the curtains facing the street. I am happy to pay for installation and the gate myself. However my landlord has told me that I am not allowed to and that my neighborhood is "safe". What is the legality here? I am on the first floor and anyone on the street could easily break in.
