Search for earlier messages here in 1999 which refer to what Mark said: if your lease does not require you to give a 30-day notice, no statute does either: a recent court case confirmed that. Your landlord must give a you 30-day notice even if it is not in your lease. The 30 days are from the next rent due date: notice today will release you on May 31, if your rent is due on the first of the month.
