Parental Guarantee forms for apartment lease

Posted by Lynda Jones on March 30, 1999 at 17:53:48:

Does anyone know if the parental guarantee forms are enforceable? I had to sign one for my 23 year old daughter for a one year lease. she was recently evicted and I'm being billed $1700 for back rent and damage repair. My position is that the form was only good for the life of the one year lease. She has been renting on a month-to-month basis for over a year so I don't feel the form I signed is still valid. I signed it for the one year lease. Also, it doesn't seem fair that she was allowed to stay in defualt so long as to run up a $1400 back rent bill. Her rent was $325/mo, but she was allowed to stay three or four months w/o paying rent. Now they're telling me I owe them.

Any advice?

Thanks.
