Yes, you're correct that everyone who signed the lease is jointly and severally responsible for the rent (unless the lease says otherwise). That means you each are responsible to the landlord for the full amount of the lease rent. You are also correct that you could sue the departing roommate for his share of the rent for the unexpired lease.

Although the departing tenant is technically responsible for finding a new roommate, I would want some input. After all, you're the one who has to live with the new roommate.

: I'm hoping he'll fill the vacancy. I'm on the road a great deal and it would be somewhat of an inconvenience.
