Dear michaelo,
I have just recently accepted a job in the Washington D.C. area and have
had to move out of my old apartment in Minneapolis. My girlfriend
however has stayed at the old apartment because of her job in
Minneapolis. She has now decided to move to Washington D.C. to live
with me and will be moving in the middle of December. Our landlord
expects us to pay an additional months rent plus $150 for moving out
after living there for only 7 months as opposed to the 12 month lease
that we both signed. I have heard that it is not legal to charge a
person a fee or penalize them in any way for breaking a lease because of
a job transfer or change. Is this true in Minnesota? If so, would it
matter if only one of the lease signers had a job change (me) and the
other (her) didn't have anything lined up in Washington, D.C. as of
yet? If there is a specific code or statute relating to my dilemma
could you please indicate which one it is?
Thank you very much for helping me with this matter. I greatly
appreciate your time and effort.
Sincerely,
Nick A. Padfield
