HELP! constructive eviction??

Ok, I admit I'm a novice, its my first time renting. But im being taken for thousands of dollars! My boyfriend and I were homeless and looking for an apartment when we found our dream, nice and spacious, nice people. We were told we would be given a lease, we were told we would be moving in on the 15th of october. I *finally* got into the apt on the 20th, no heat, no hot water, no stove, NO LEASE, it was november by the time all this was corrected (except for the lease, I was backed into a corner, cant argue too effectively when you cant afford hotels anymore) and they want a half months rent from me for this time, 700$. Ive given them 1400 as well as security and deposit for november but now theyre threatening me for the rest of the money. I filed a complaint with the police of harassment (telling me to expect 8 men with baseballbats to throw my things out the window is harassment, am i right?). I dont know what to do now though. I offered them 400$ as a settlement but my landlord doesnt want to negotiate, he just wants to get me to leave, I havent even been here a month! He says he can tell that we cant afford the rent, and that we're future problem tenants, we make enough money and can prove it, we just dont want to be ripped off. A lawyer friend of mine told me to research constructive eviction, can anyone tell me any more on this? I admit total naievite, I was pushed around and I let them get the better of me and catch me unprepared. Im about to be pushed out into the cold nyc streets without any money to relocate, HELP!
