I moved into an apartment, under a subleasing agreement with people I know (verbal only). Now, after having taken my first rent check and cashed it last month, the real estate co. that owns the building tells me I am illegal (which I didn't know) and that I have to move out immediately.

Do I have any recourse or is there a public agency I could contact here in NYC to find out what, if any, my rights are?
