On Sunday, September 27, 1998, the New York Post ran a front page story about the ten worst judges in New York City. Surprisingly, only one housing court judge made the list. Here's what the post had to say about her:
"Sue Ann Hoahng, Brooklyn Housing Court. Easily enraged, she plays at being a criminal-court judge by locking up people who appear in her courtroom."
By the way, also on the list is Supreme Court Justice Gerald Sheindlin -- the husband of TV's Judge Judy. I find Judge Judy very entertaining, but being temperate and caring about the law in the jurisdiction where the case arose are not her strong points. Former New York City mayor Ed Koch, quite surprisingly, is more even tempered in his demeanor and in his decisions, and the staff at The People's Court make an excellent effort to research and follow the relevant local law. Even Mills Lane and Joe Brown are more like real judges than Judge Judy. Unfortunately, most people's idea of what a judge should be like -- former People's Court judge Joe Wapner -- is now doing Animal Court on the Animal Planet cable channel, and commercials for one of those companies that pay you money upfront for a mortgage, an insurance settlement, lottery winnings, etc.
